With so many electric vehicles (EVs) on the road today—ranging from European brands to popular Japanese imports—it’s natural to ask: Will this charger work with my car?
The short answer: Yes. Our home EV chargers are designed to support all EVs in New Zealand, using either a Type 1 or Type 2 plug, or an easy-to-use adapter.
Understanding Plug Types: Type 1 vs. Type 2
EVs connect to chargers using two common AC plug standards:
Type 1 (SAE J1772)
- Commonly found in Japanese imports such as Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
- 5-pin single-phase plug
- Often used with Type 1 to Type 2 adapter cables
Type 2 (IEC 62196)
- Standard across European, Australian, and New Zealand new car markets
- 7-pin design supporting single-phase or three-phase charging
- Used by brands like Tesla (NZ/AU spec), Hyundai, Kia, MG, BMW, VW, and more
🔌Important Note:
Our tethered (cable-attached) chargers come with a fixed Type 2 plug only.
If your vehicle uses a Type 1 plug, please choose a socket-only charger (untethered) and pair it with a separate Type 1 to Type 2 cable, available from us or other retailers.
Quick Answers to Common Questions
Q: Does your charger support Type 1 or Type 2?
A: Yes! We offer support for both standards:
- Tethered chargers come with a Type 2 cable
- Socket chargers can work with either Type 1 or Type 2, depending on the cable you use
Q: My car is an import—will it still work?
A: Absolutely. Many Japanese-import EVs use Type 1 plugs, and our socket chargers can connect via a Type 1 to Type 2 cable.
Q: Do I need a separate adapter or cable?
A: If you have a Type 1 vehicle, yes—you’ll need a compatible charging cable. We’re happy to advise you on the best fit.
Q: Will charging speed differ based on plug type?
A: Not significantly. Our AC chargers provide up to 7.4kW output, and your EV will safely draw the correct amount of power.

No matter what EV you drive—whether it’s a Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3, BYD, or Hyundai Kona—you can charge it with our products.
✅ Compatible with all EVs in New Zealand, supporting both Type 1 and Type 2 charging.
⚠️ Some imported vehicles may require a separate cable or adapter. Tethered chargers include a Type 2 plug only—Type 1 users should choose a socket model and add the appropriate cable.
